Maintenance Tips
• HAND WASH
To prevent damage to the product, it is recommended to clean individually with warm water and non-abrasive cleaning agents. Do not use a dishwasher, and avoid using hot water.
• DRY AND WIPE
Place the glass on a towel or absorbent kitchen paper to dry it by absorption, or wipe it carefully while holding the body of the glass with your thumb to reduce pressure. Use a lint-free, fine cotton or linen towel. Store the glass back in its box or stand it upright to prevent contact with other glasses.
• STORAGE
Handmade crystal glasses have thin rims, so they should be stored with the opening facing up in a cabinet or their original packaging to avold contact and chipping. Do not hang the glasses by hooks to prevent handle breakage. Store the glasses in a clean and tidy place, with the opening facing up and the caps left open for air circulation.
• MAINTENANCE
Do not leave residue in the glass. Clean promptly after use. Decanters should be washed in warm water with a soft sponge, without detergent. If there is fogging, pour in some coarse salt and half a liter of alcohol. Shake vigorously and rinse with warm water several times. Insert absorbent kitchen paper into the glass for about 10 hours to absorb any remaining moisture.

Edo Kiriko（江戸切子） is a traditional Japanese glass-cutting craft, celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and intricate designs. Originating during the Edo period of Japan, around 1834, Edo Kiriko has a history of nearly two centuries. It stands as a remarkable testament to Japan's cultural heritage and the artisans' dedication to perfection.
Born in Japan, Edo Kiriko is a cut-glass art defined by precision, patience and the movement of light. From the first guide line to the final polish, every stage reveals more of the pattern, color and depth within the glass.
EDO KIRIKO - From First Line to Final Light
STEP 01
THE EDO KIRIKO PROCESS (KIRIKO KAKO - 切子加工)
Edo Kiriko begins with a formed glass vessel and a rotating cutting wheel. Guided by hand, the surface is gradually carved to create the lines, facets and depth that define the finished design.
STEP 02
VERTICAL GUIDELINES (WARIDASHI: TATE-SEN - 割り出し・縦線)
The artisan begins by marking vertical reference lines around the glass. These guides establish the spacing, alignment and proportions that will direct every cut that follows.
STEP 03
HORIZONTAL GUIDELINES (WARIDASHI: YOKO-SEN - 割り出し・横線)
The glass is steadily rotated as horizontal and circular guides are added. Together with the vertical lines, they create a balanced framework across the curved surface.
STEP 04
DIAGONAL GUIDELINES (WARIDASHI: NANAME-SEN - 割り出し・斜線)
Diagonal guides connect the established reference points and define the geometry of the design. Their placement determines how the finished pattern will flow around the glass.
STEP 05
ROUGH CUTTING (ARAZURI - 粗摺り)
Holding the glass against a wet, coarse diamond wheel, the artisan cuts the principal grooves into the surface. These first cuts establish the direction, depth and underlying structure of the pattern.
STEP 06
REVEALING THE COLOR LAYER (IRO-KISE GARASU NO KEZURIDASHI - 色被せガラスの削り出し)
As the cuts pass through the colored outer layer, the clear glass beneath begins to emerge. This contrast between color and clarity gives Edo Kiriko its distinctive depth and luminous definition.
STEP 07
DETAIL CUTTING (SANBANGAKE - 三番掛け)
A finer diamond wheel returns to the initial framework, sharpening the edges, refining the curves and adding narrower secondary cuts. The pattern becomes increasingly precise and intricate.
STEP 08
STONE SMOOTHING (ISHIKAKE - 石掛け)
Using water and a fine natural or artificial stone, the artisan smooths the surfaces left rough by cutting. This careful refinement removes uneven edges and prepares every groove for polishing.
STEP 09
POLISHING & BUFFING (MIGAKI / BAFUGAKE - 磨き・バフ掛け)
The cut surfaces are polished with fine abrasives until their transparency and brilliance return. Final buffing brings out a clean, luminous finish and allows light to travel freely through every facet.
STEP 10
CLEANING & INSPECTION (SENJO / KENPIN - 洗浄・検品)
The glass is thoroughly cleaned and dried before being examined from every angle. The alignment, clarity, edges and overall finish of the pattern are carefully inspected.
STEP 11
THE FINISHED PIECE (KANSEI - 完成)
With the final polish complete, Edo Kiriko reveals its full character—crisp lines, luminous contrast and patterns that shift beautifully with the light. What began as a series of guide lines becomes a finished piece made to be enjoyed, displayed, collected or given.
